After their 9 – 1 thumping by Tottenham at the weekend, Wigan’s players have decided to personally refund the fans that made the journey to North London.
Wigan were the first side to concede 9 goals in the Premier League since Manchester United beat Ipswich 9 – 0 in 2005. The result was Wigan’s record league defeat and Tottenham’s biggest win for 32 years.
Fans who bought tickets from the DW Stadium will be entitled to a full refund provided they contact the ticket office before 4th December.
Speaking on the club’s web site, captain Mario Melchiot said:
We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday.
This is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their loyalty.
There is not a lot else to say, just that as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed, we feel it was below our standards and this (the refund) is something we feel we owe to the fans.
Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday.
We are professionals, we will take it on the chin and move on but it’s important that we do not take our supporters for granted.
