NEW WIGAN DEAL FOR KIRKLAND

Wigan Athletic badgeChris Kirkland has pledged his loyalty to Wigan Athletic and has signed a new deal that will tie him to the JJB until 2012.

Kirkland started his career with Coventry City before he was signed by Liverpool. But the keeper endured a nightmare spell at Anfield, bedevilled with injuries, before moving on to WBA and ultimately Wigan.

After keeping 20 clean sheets in 64 Wigan appearances and winning one England senior cap, Kirkland became the subject of transfer speculation which manager Steve Bruce is more than happy to have put an end to.

“I knew Chris was a good keeper before I joined but until I had worked with him, I didn’t realise just how good he actually is,” said Bruce.

“Him signing this new deal is a massive boost for the club.”
