Tottenham 1-1 Middlesbrough
Under the watchful eye of England manager Fabio Capello, Stewart Downing did his international chances no harm with a 30-yard strike to earn a draw for Middlesbrough at White Hart Lane.
Record Boro signing, Brazilian Afonso Alves thought he had put Boro ahead after only two minutes but instead of hitting his third of the season, the goal was ruled off side.
After the early Alves chance, Tottenham controlled the first half of this game and went into the break one up due to an own goal from Grounds. He diverted Aaron Lennon’s volley beyond keeper Mark Schwarzer just before the half hour.
Spurs could have had more, both Dimitar Berbatov and Jermaine Jenas squandered several opportunities to extend their lead.
Boro made Spurs rue their missed chance when on 69 minutes they equalised, Downing’s long-range effort deflected off Jenas’s head and into the top corner of the goal.
