Tottenham produced an inspired display at White Hart Lane as they hammered Wigan Athletic, recording their best ever top flight win and equalling the Premier League scoring record at the same time.
Spurs ran out winners by 9 goals to 1, the first time a team has scored that many in the EPL since Manchester United thrashed Ipswich 9 – 0 at Old Trafford nine years ago.
And it was Jermain Defoe with 5 second half goals who did most of the damage, ably assisted by Aaron Lennon who ran the visitors defence ragged. Interestingly, Defoe was due to wear the new Macaw Green F50i’s but was persuaded by coach Clive Allen to wear the Silver / Red versions instead.
Defoe’s performance will have helped his England ambitions
Amazingly, it was only 1 – 0 at half time, Peter Crouch heading Spurs in front.' Defoe then scored from close range after the break and again from a tight angle.
Another crystal clear ‘Henry’ hand ball offence, this time by Paul Scharner, went unpunished as he pulled a goal back but Defoe was on hand again to volley home with Lennon getting in on the act with Tottenham’s fifth.
Defoe scored with two more crisp finishes as he became only the third EPL player to hit 5 in one game after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, while Chris Kirkland scored an unfortunate own goal and Niko Kranjcar smashed home the ninth.
In the day’s other games, Blackburn won 2 – 0 at Bolton and Stoke edged out Portsmouth 1 – 0.
