Shevchenko rediscovered is scoring touch to score the opener for Chelsea last night. He guided a pass from Frank Lampard past the Levski goalkeeper with the outside of his right football boot.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, drilled home a second in the 83rd minute, after a pass from Ricardo Carvalho. This was the first competitive goal Wright-Phillips has scored for the club in 52 appearances, 35 as a substitute, since moving from Manchester City for £21 million.

Shevchenko has been criticised for not adapting to life in England, which has increased speculation of a return to AC Milan.

However, last night Shevchenko’s strike pushed him into second place in the list of Top European goal scorers, five behind Germany’s Gerd Muller.

Shevchenko has scored 57 goals in European club football, 44 in the Champions League.
