Before the weekend, the last time Manchester United leaked a Premier League goal was on the 8th November 2008 against Arsenal.
1,334 minutes later Roque Santa Cruz, in a pair of gold and black Puma King XL football boots, produced an equaliser for Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford as United had to work hard to overcome Sam Allardyce’s side in a 2 – 1 win.
Santa Cruz’s efforts have won him the Weekend Star title, though in fairness to United, first choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and centre back Nemanja Vidic were on the bench as Tomasz Kuszczak and Jonny Evans deputised.
Wayne Rooney had put United ahead before Santa Cruz equalised, though the game will probably be remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning free kick winner, a booking for the same player for a remarkably obvious dive, Evans’s disallowed goal which followed a highly dubious United corner and a turned down penalty claim from Rovers after Morten Gamst Pedeserson seemed to be held back by Rafael Da Silva (Fergie said he dived but he didn’t).
Although not at their best, United’s victory has turned out to be hugely significant with Liverpool being held by Manchester City on Sunday. Sir Alex’s team are now 7 points clear at the top of the table while Blackburn remain in trouble in the bottom three, 2 points from safety.
More worrying for United is their lack of centre backs for this week’s Champions League tie with Inter Milan. Vidic is suspended and following the Rovers match, Evans has joined Gary Neville, John O’Shea and Wes Brown on the treatment table.
