Headlining Puma’s ‘Speed Boot’ sector at the moment is the unmistakeable evoSPEED 1.3 Dragon football boot.
Sergio Agüero, Santi Cazorla and Radamel Falcao have been wearing these recently, so we thought we’d best lace them up and take a ride too.
Looking Good
Inspired by the Japanese Dragon this evoSPEED is decorated in the most unique design of any boot on the market. The attention to detail from box to boot helps make this not just an excellent football boot, but a work of art.
With a white canvas, the boot is made up with a red Puma stripe whilst the green details the dragon. The green was chosen to emulate the base colour of tattoos and it does a good job of giving the boot a ‘tattoo-like’ image.
The upper theme is completed with a dragon skin finish, which when you run your fingers over the boot, feels like scales.
Comfort
The evoSPEED was created with three things in mind – light, flex and fit – no mention of comfort, but being a speed boot, we didn’t expect the most luxurious ride.
For a boot to be light you need to make sacrifices and whilst this isn’t a foot pamperer, we’ve been in a lot worse.
The fit is good, particularly if you have narrow feet and because of this you can get away with not having some of the comfort add-ons.
Tech
So what tech impressed us?
The lightweight, flexible microfibre upper allowed a superb feel on the ball. Every touch is clean and crisp. Where we give bonus marks is the impressive 3D Griptex finish, which not only gives the Dragonesque look, but gives that little bit of extra grip on contact, even in wet weather.
Jimmy messed around with a bit of ‘knuckleballing’ in testing and found this boot and the Griptex finish in particular, really worked well.
Of course, one of the noticeable changes on the evoSPEED 1.3 is the relocation of the everFIT cage. Usually on the inside of the boot, the evoSPEED 1.3 changes it to the outside of the shoe. The result is your foot stays where it is supposed to be and slides around less.
The conical studs gave good grip and traction, though we were testing in ideal conditions for this soleplate type.
Summary
They’re a good choice for the speedsters, but not for those with wide feet.
We’ve liked the evoSPEED 1.3 since it was first released in July 2014, we really liked this unique, jaw dropping colourway.
You need to buy these boots if you want to stand out from the crowd, or you’re a collector.

Is this the best design you have seen on a football boot?
We want to hear your view in the comments below.
i do like the look of these but will the dragon paintwork wear off?
Although we haven’t used these week in week out, they’ve been subject to some serious testing and we’ve not seen any of the design wear off as yet.
