Paul Robinson Triumphant in the Battle of the England Keepers
Paul Robinson emphatically staked his claim as first choice England keeper with an amazing 95 yard goal that left rival Watford’s Ben Foster stunned and embarrassed. The two England goal keepers squared up on Saturday as Spurs took on Watford and whilst their rivalry for position as England’s top keeper was the talking point before the game, it was the wonder/freak goal from Paul Robinson’s blue Nike Total 90 Supremacy Football Boots that grabbed all the headlines.
Robinson’s unlikely goal came from a free-kick taken from the edge of his box which made its way all the way to Foster, only for the Watford keeper to misjudge the bounce and see the ball go over his head and into the net.
After the game Robinson refused to gloat on his rival’s mistake saying “It was a freak goal and there’s nobody who knows more about those than me over the last season. It was fantastic to score a goal, but I can’t really pretend that I meant it.” Robinson is no stranger to embarrassing goals himself having suffered a football boot malfunction against Croatia for England last October when he missed a simple back pass from Gary Neville to see the ball roll into the England goal!
We have to hand it to you Misses Robinson
The recent goalie goals sets up an interesting tie in the UEFA Cup Quarter Finals, as Robinson will face Sevilla keeper Andres Palop who himself scored in his match against FC Shakhtar (Read the article). Robinson said: “Their keeper scored the other night and we’ll be playing each other in a couple of weeks so I’ll be taking shots at him!”.
Let’s hope Robinson can continue his run for Spurs and England and use his football boots to score goals not miss any easy back passes!
