Michael Owen scored a brace as Newcastle beat local rivals Sunderland.

Newcastle got off to the perfect start when Michael Owen put them in front inside just four minutes. Geremi crossed and Owen glanced the ball off of his head past Craig Gordon.

Newcastle got their second just before half time. Owen played a one-two with Viduka Higginbotham tried to tackle but as Owen chipped over him the ball clipped his arm and the referee pointed to the spot.

Owen took the penalty, shooting to Gordon’s right. Whilst the spot kick was close to Gordon, the power was too much for Gordon to keep the ball out of the net.

newcastleThe win guaranteed Newcastle’s status in the Premier League, whilst Sunderland remain 5 points above the drop zone.
