Middlesbrough’s record signing Alfonso Alves scored his first two goals for the club, but it wasn’t enough to earn a victory with United replying through Ronaldo and Rooney.

Boro seemed to stand off United in the opening quarter of the game, during which Ronaldo scored the opener for the visitors.

Middlesbrough failed to deal with a corner and Carrick picked up the pieces, his ball into the box found Ronaldo who socred his seventh goal in six games.

Middlesbrough did get back into the game though, and drew level on 35 minutes when Gary O’Neil’s lob forward was headed on by Aliadiere and Alfonso Alves drilled the ball home past Van der Sar for his first club goal.

Middlesbrough continued on the offensive after the break, with Alves looking a real threat, supported by Aliadiere. Ten minutes into the half , the ball bounced off Aliadiere’s head and into the path of Alves, he opened his body and angled the ball into Van der Sar’s far corner.

Alves might of got a hat trick five minutes after the goal, but his header was cleared off the line by Ferdinand.

In a tense final period, United grabbed the equaliser. Substitute Ji-Sung Park went past Taylor and cut back for Rooney, whose shot deflected off Wheater and into the back of the net.

Gareth Southgate:

MIDDLESBROUGH 2-2 MANCHESTER UNITED I am happy with the way we played. We had a full house today and we gave a good account of ourselves.

We were up against an outstanding team and we had them rattled.

The team performance was excellent. We answered most of the questions and had them on the back foot for the majority of the game.

Alex Ferguson:

MIDDLESBROUGH 2-2 MANCHESTER UNITEDThere’s no question we could have lost the game as they had some chances.

At times the defending was a bit haphazard but in other ways we could have won because some of the approach play was very good.

They changed their formation to a 4-4-2, got an equaliser, and it was a great game of football after that.
