FRANCE’S ‘SUPER CUP’ COMES TO NEW YORK

In a major move for the LFP and US Soccer, the 2012 Trophée des Champions is going to be held at the Red Bull Arena in New York.

The traditional curtain-raiser to the French season, the Trophée des Champions is the yearly match-up between Ligue 1 Champion will face the French Cup Winner – much like the Community Shield in England.

This year’s battle for the first silverware of the French season will take place between surprise-victors Montpellier and the ever-classy Olympique Lyonnais, but in a historic first – will be held in New York.

Those who follow the French domestic league know that the Trophée des Champions has been touring the globe for the last three seasons, taking in Tunisia, Morocco and Canada so far, and now it’s the US’ turn to take in this clash between two of the best teams in France.

Whilst other leagues have been ‘umm’ing and ‘ahh’ing over the prospect of an international fixture, the forward-thinking LFP have been exporting their season-starter for 4 years, now – a move we couldn’t support more.

Anyone in New York that’s interested in going can look forward to a 3pm kick off on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
