Beckham to Newcastle

Just as the media circus started to slow down at Tyneside, Newcastle pulled the trump PR card – Beckham for Newcastle. Newcastle’s owner is said to be on the trail of Beckham, most likely on a loan deal. Spurred by the fact that their owner, Mike Ashley owns Sports Direct and a large stake in Adidas, the brand that makes Beckham’s football boots, it doesn’t take a genius to see a marketing plan there! link

McClaren: Beck’s Won’t Keep England Shirt

All round football expert, ahemm, Steve McClaren gets his name in the press by commenting on David Beckham‘s future for England. The man who dropped the influential skipper, then brought him back when in dire straits says “It’s going to be very difficult for him to continue playing for England.” Thanks Steve, now pop off and get those gnashers polished please. link

Defoe Don’t Go

Poor Jermain Defoe, last week we reported that Juande Ramos had told Defoe to go but it seems Ramos was just a bit down and he didn’t mean it. Jermain: “He pulled me the next day and said he didn’t mean it [that Defoe could leave]. He was honest with me. He said he wanted me to stay and get goals and said he wanted to achieve something special. He is a good manager with great ideas, so it’s good.” Seems Ramos changes his mind like Jermain changes WAGs. link

Robinson On Way Out

Staying at White Hart Lane, ‘Portly Paul Robinson‘ hasn’t head Ramos change his mind about playing him. The goalkeeper has been dropped for the last 4 games and has put in a transfer request. Spurs have told him to wait until the summer. link

Owen to Skipper Newcastle

KK has reconciled the rift with Michael Owen by installing him as captain at Newcastle. Despite hammering KK in his autobiography, Owen was given the armband on Saturday and has been told to keep it by KK. Owen said KK’s arrival has been ‘uplifting’. link

African Cup of Nations

The ACN is well under way now, having opened with Ghana beating Guinea 2-1 on Sunday in the curtain raiser, thanks to a wonder strike from Portsmouth’s Sulley Muntari. Day two saw top guns Nigeria and The Ivory Coast battle it out. Ivory Coast were victorious with Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou scoring after dribbling through 3 players and slotting home. In the other contests, Kanoute scored from the spot for Mali to beat Benin by a goal to nil and Morocco fired 5 past Namibia in their 5-1 win. Today’s fixtures are; Egypt V Cameroon and Sudan V Zambia.

Tottenham V Arsenal

Tottenham are at home this evening, in the second leg of the Carling Cup, which is poised at one a piece. Arsenal are likely to field their second string side, as is usual in this cup. Tottenham are relishing the opportunity to end a long run of failing to beat the gunners, so are more likely to be at full strength. The other semi final takes place tomorrow at Everton, who are currently 2-1 down to Chelsea.

WAGs (wives and girlfriends)

Frank Lampard is reported to be back in tune with his fiance Elen Rives. The couple have had a rocky period, due to allegations of Frankie playing away. They managed to spend a night together and exceed the minimum table spend of £350 in a Mayfair club on Saturday. Oh well done the both of you. Yawn! WAGs
