Road to the World Cup
It was tight, but Uruguay made it to the World Cup after a play off. Having come fifth in their qualifying group, they were pitted with Costa Rica in a play off. They led 1-0 after the first leg and completed the task with a draw in the second leg. Uruguay were the last team to qualify for the World Cup.

Atl©tico Madrid’s Diego Forlán and Ajax’s Luis Suárez form a left and right footed partnership for Uruguay. It’s a potentially lethal partnership as between them they scored 77 goals last season. There is a huge dependence on Forlán and Suárez with the rest of the squad lacking any goalscoring credentials.

Oscar Washington Tabarez last managed Uruguay at the World Cup 20 years ago in Italy. During that campaign they reached the last 16. His second tenure as coach began in 2006, when the 62 year old replaced Jorge Fossati.
