World Cup Football Boots: South Africa
Fifa Ranking: 83
Group: A
Form Ahead of World Cup
As host nation, South Africa didn’t have to qualify to enter the World Cup. However, despite a lack of competitive games, over the course of their last few games South Africa have enjoyed some good results and with the backing of the home fans, will be tough to beat. History is also on their side, no host nation as failed to get through the group stages.
Key Players
Steven Pienaar and Aaron Mokoena.
Pienaar is to South Africa what Wayne Rooney is to England, their ‘main man’. Pienaar has played well for Everton this season and South Africa will be hoping his craft and inspiration can carry their team.
Team captain Aaron Mokoena has a wealth of top level experience having played in European leagues throughout his career, now with 100 + caps, his experience will pay dividends for the host nation.
The Gaffer
Another thing going for South Africa is their manager. Carlos Alberto Parreira is a World Cup veteran having managed at five World Cups for four different teams. He won the trophy with Brazil back in 1994, but has been less successful with Ghana, Kuwait and a previous stint with South Africa.
