With Manchester United moving further clear of the chasing pack on Saturday following their 1 – 0 win over Everton (Cristiano Ronaldo slotting home the winning penalty in his Citron Mercurial Vapor IV’s) it was always likely that whoever settled the heavyweight clash between Liverpool and Chelsea on Sunday would be a strong contender for this week’s Footy Boots accolade.
And so it’s proved with Liverpool striker Fernando Torres getting the nod after his late double strike in the white, black and sapphire colourway of the Nike Total 90 Laser II, gave the Merseyside team a 2 – 0 win over their title rivals.
It’s the second time that Torres has taken the title this season, the first occasion came after another 2 goal performance in the derby game at Everton back in September last year.
This time round, the Spanish international left it late to secure the win – his first, a classic near post header, came on 89 minutes and a much simpler second arrived in the 4th minute of time added on.
The victory moved Liverpool to within 2 points of United at the top of the Premier League and the significance of the win wasn’t lost on Torres who said afterwards:
We knew that this was a massive game. Every player knew that. From the beginning until the very end, we worked really hard with intensity and determination. We are very happy with the 2-0 scoreline.
We know that games in England, more than any other league, go for 90 minutes and you can score in any minute and you have to keep going until the end.
It is a long race. We know that Manchester United are top of the table but we are going to fight with them until the end.
It has brought back some belief and confidence. These were my first two goals since coming back from injury. I have scored at home for the first time this season and to do that against Chelsea was fantastic.
Fernando is proving that not only does he have the skill of a world class footballer, but the attitude that has to come with it.. I believe this season is going to be liverpools season..
I agrees, Kevin. Fernando is becoming more shining. Hope livepool plays better in Premier.
Go forward LFC!
