Rio Ferdidand has been forced out of the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan and has been replaced by Gary Cahill of Bolton Wanderers.
Ferdinand was a doubt ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League final defeat by Barcelona and now joins fellow United team mate Micahel Carrick on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Ashley Cole should be fit despite picking up a knock in the FA Cup final.
With John Terry certain to play, Cahill joins Mattew Upson and Joleon Lescott in the race to partner him at the heart of England’s defence.
Speaking to the Bolton web site, Cahill said:
I’ve had a good season and I’ve worked really hard.
I’ve been in the provisional squad twice before and then this third time I was included once again, so I’m obviously delighted to get the call.
