England and the United States played out a 1-1 draw in Rustenburg on Saturday that will leave both sides feeling unsatisfied with the outcome.
England started the game at an electric pace, closing down the US back line from the first whistle. The Three Lions got their reward for such pressure as Elime Heskey slid a pass from his Nike Tiempo Legend III Elites into the path of Steven Gerrard, who expertly placed the ball out of Tim Howard’s reach.
Both sides exchanged blows in the first half, with Aaron Lennon breaking free for England and the titanic Oguchi Onyewu looking dangerous from Landon Donovan‘s expert set-pieces.
The break for the US came just before half time, as Fulham’s Clint Dempsey hit a speculative effort towards the England goal which escaped England Keeper Robert Green‘s grasp and rolled into the net behind him.
Both returned after the break to play out a frustratingly goalless second half – England as lucky to escape Jozy Altidore’s effort as they were frustrated by the continued heroics of veteran stopper Tim Howard.
