How Paul Jewell and his team must be looking forward to the end of this desperate campaign after the relegated Rams were given another footballing lesson at Pride Park.

The Midlands club who have now gone 28 games without a win and in terms of points gained remain in danger of becoming the worst Premier League side in history.

Their goalkeeper, former Manchester United stopper Roy Carroll, will probably spend the evning thinking of happier times, behind a rather better back four, after going through an afternoon that can best be described as torrid.

He failed to clear Ashley Young’s free-kick for Villa’s first and was helpless to stop John Carew drilling in seconds later before Stiliyan Petrov expertly lashed Carroll’s hideously skewed clearance into the top corner from 45 yards.

Gareth Barry slotted home a fourth after half-time before Derby’s misery was completed by first Gabriel Agbonlahor and then Marlon Harewood as Villa ended up with half a dozen.
