David Beckham has made his Serie A debut for AC Milan, playing for 89 minutes against AS Roma on Sunday.
The former England captain, who’s on loan from LA Galaxy, was expected to start on the bench but Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti sprang a surprise by naming Beckham in his starting line up and playing him on the right of a three man midfield.
Beckham, who wore his customised Adidas Predator football boots, hadn’t played a competitive game since ending the MLS season 3 months ago.
Mathieu Flamini replaced Beckham with 1 minute to go as the game ended in a 2 – 2 draw.
After the game, Beckham said:
I found out I was going to start before the game during the team meeting.
I was very happy that the manager kept me on for as long as he did because it is important for me to get match fitness and, to be honest, I felt better than I thought I would feel.
Now I just hope to start some more games, but I will take one step at a time.
