David Beckham made his high profile début for LA Galaxy against Chelsea.
Beckham played 16 minutes including injury time. He touched the ball 12 times, took a corner and leaped over Steve Sidwell’s scything challenge.
That was about it, a début that would have gone pretty much unnoticed had it not been for Brand Beckham’s high profile.
Beckham’s lifetime deal with Adidas, reportedly worth £320 million, is already paying off. The new LA Galaxy shirt has already sold more than 200,000 times, and it has only been available for 1 week. That makes the shirt the best selling shirt in the world.
His signature football boots, renamed the Adidas Predator Absolute Globe, are also likely to be a huge hit for Adidas.
Perhaps most significant was the gate at the Home Depot Centre, 27,000 people watched the game, a marked improvement to the gate of their last competitive match which saw a lowly 2,000 in attendance.
