If there’s one brand in the football boot market that are tough to get a bead on, it’s Asics. The Japanese brand were massive through the 80’s (ex-pro’s of that era remember the Testimonial very fondly), and now are making a different type of boot.
Still one of the dominant names in running shoe technology and big in the rugby market, the new Asics DS Light X-Fly 2 sees the brand back in confident form with their football boots.
Following up the criminally under-publicised X-Fly 1, the Asics DS Light X-Fly 2 launches in this Flash Yellow / Black colourway that will undoubtedly turn heads.
The lightest ever football boots that Asics have ever produced, the 175g/6.2oz X-Fly 2 joins the Umbro Velocita and Diadora DD-NA2 as being lightweight boots from more surprising brands that push the bigger names in terms of weight.
As you’d expect from a super-lightweight football boot, the feature-list is a little minimalist (you gotta keep that weight down).
Asics are exceptionally proud of their lightweight Micro-Synthetic Leather Upper, which is designed to be soft and mouldable, whilst still offering great ball feel.
As with all Asics boots, the DS Light X-Fly 2 does run a little wider in the forefoot than usual, so could prove a very enticing option for players who find traditional speed football boots a little on the narrow side.
This is also the second-ever Asics football boot to use the X-Fly soleplate. Seen here in it’s MS or ‘Mixed Stud’ variation, the aim of the plate is twofold.
First of all, agility is top of the card with a perforated forefoot allowing for flexibility, whilst conical forefoot studs offer up rotational freedom.
All of this is made from Asics’ Solyte polymer, which offers outstanding durability at a super-low weight point.
Are these a pair of football boots you could take a chance on?
