Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has accused Liverpool’s Alvaro Arbeloa of feigning injury in order to get him sent off.
In Sunday’s 1 – 1 draw at the Emirates stadium, Adebayor was dismissed for 2 yellow card offences, the second of which was for a tackle which referee Howard Webb deemed to be ‘over the top’.
However the Togo international believes that Webb got it wrong, and was fooled by Arbeloa’s reaction to his challenge. Speaking to the press after the match, Adebayor said:
I cannot say he cheated, but what he did was not fair play at all. The defender threw himself on the floor as if I put a knife in him.
I don’t think I deserved a yellow card and just want the referee to go back and watch it on TV again.
I just wanted to protect the ball. A striker like me, Robbie Keane, (Nicolas) Anelka or (Didier) Drogba always have to protect the ball and that’s what happened.
At the end of the end of the day he has made a mistake and he has to recognise that what he has done is a little mistake.
Adebayor’s dismissal infuriated the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who said:
I am convinced we would have won with 11 players. We took control with 10 men, but imagine what it would have been like with 11?
