David Trezeguet thought he was so unlikely to be called up for France’s friendly against England on Wednesday that he didn’t even have his football boots with him.
Trezeguet on a family trip to Monaco from Juventus where he plays his football, only found out on Monday when he turned his mobile phone on that he had been called up as a replacement for injured Karim Benzema.
According to L’Equipe, the French and Juventus striker had left his football boots, Adidas F50.8,and his passport in Turin. Leaving a 270 km drive back to collect them before getting a flight to France.
“We looked for a flight to Paris, but there was nothing before early evening,” Trezeguet told L’Equipe.
“I know I’m called up because of Karim’s injury,” Trezeguet said. “I don’t get the impression that I am playing big stakes against England. It is not down to this game whether or not I get on the list. That’s my opinion, anyway.”
Trezeguet, is the Italian league’s top scorer this term with 17 goals. He is also France’s third all-time leading scorer with 34.
