Middlesbrough are still not out of the relegation picture while Sunderland have secured their top flight status for another season.
Tuncay calmly drove Boro ahead in four minutes before Danny Higginbotham headed in for Sunderland’s equaliser two minutes later.
A minute before half-time Michael Chopra fired home before Afonso Alves netted 17 minutes from time to make the game all square.
But Sunderland substitute Daryl Murphy headed home a dramatic injury-time winner to sink the visitors in an absorbing Wear-Tees derby.
