Real Madrid 1-2 Roma (2-4)

Roma knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League.

Despite expectations of a lively start from Real Madrid, the first half was a dull affair with few chances. The referee was doing his best to stifle the game too, using his whistle to stop the game at each opportunity. There was one notable period in the game, Alberto Aquilani’s double strike. From all of 30 yards, Aquilani had a thundering strike beat Casillas, but rebounded out off of the crossbar, the ball was shortly returned to Aquilani on the edge of the area, he struck again, low and hard to the left of Casillas, but Casillas did very well to get down and save the shot.

The second half started a little livelier, Madrid were more offensive and Julio Baptista saw his free kick hit the crossbar early on. The game then drifted back into the mould of the first half for large periods.

Mid way through the second half, and the game came alive. Roma’s Tonetto hit a great cross from the left finding Vucinic in the box. He unleashed a powerful left footed shot which rattled the crossbar. Real Madrid then countered but Robinho’s effort was blocked by Juan.

Real Madrid 2-1 down and unable to create any clear cut chances then went down to 10 men, Pepe obstructing and the over efficient referee handed him his second yellow card and sent him for an early bath. As if that wasn’t enough, they then conceded.

Tonetto crossed from the left again nd Taddei got in front of his marker to head in from 12 yards out.

Within seconds of the restart, Raul got behind the Roma defence for the first time, the Champions League all time top goal scorer rarely misses a one and one, he slotted past Juan, to bring the aggregate score back to 3-2 Roma.

Madrid with their 10 men continued to push for the equaliser to take the game into extra time, but Roma finsihed the game off in extra time. Vucinic, who had been involved in much of Roma’s positive play, got his head on the end of a long ball into the box, which beat Casillas.

Real Madrid have now gone out at this stage of the competition for the third season in a row.
