PortsmouthPortsmouth 0-0 NewcastleNewcastle

It threatened to be a thriller at Fratton Park, instead Portsmouth and Newcastle United fought out a goalless draw.

Newcastle stretched their unbeaten run to five matches as the FA Cup finalists Portsmouth managed a sixth goalless draw at Fratton Park this season.

With Pompey having half an eye on the FA Cup final, this game never lived up to its expectation.

Newcastle went close when Geremi’s long-range effort and the Aussie Mark Viduka’s volley both forced England’s goalkeeper into good saves.

Portsmouth also went close with second-half chances from both Glen Johnson and Jermain Defoe.

However, it was a great save off of the head of David James that denied Michael Owen from scoring the best chance of the game.

With Everton drawing at Birmingham, Portsmouth failed to capitalise and are still four points behind the Toffees in sixth place.
