George Gillett confirmed his relationship with Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks is unworkable and confirmed that he will not sell a single share to his partner, for fear of death threats.
Tom Hicks has his sights set on securing a majority 51% holding in Liverpool, but George Gillett has now claimed he wants to try and buy Hicks out.
Gillett went public on the ongoing saga and said:
We get 2,000 emails a week, I’d say 95% have been directed at comments made by my partner and five per cent have frankly been aimed at both of us saying, ‘Go home Americans’.
The thing that angers them the most is the prospect I might sell even one share of stock to my partner. They do not want him to have a controlling interest in this club, they don’t want him to have any ownership in the club based on what they’re saying to me.
We’ve received phone calls in the middle of the night threatening our lives, death threats. I’m not shy if I make a mistake. I’m prepared to take the hit for it.
Rafa Benitez, with the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday said:
There is nothing I can do but concentrate on the game and prepare properly.
