If a pair of your muddy football boots lay undisturbed in an attic for 30 odd years, you’d imagine that upon their discovery, they’d be worthless and headed straight for the dustbin.

But when the football boots in question belong to a football genius, then it’s another matter entirely.

Back in the 1970’s, following a Northern Ireland game, a certain George Best handed the football boots over to Pat Jennings for safe keeping to “hang on to while I go into town.”

The football boots, still covered in mud, with the laces still tied and not seen in public since then, are now to go on display, forming part of an exhibition at the inaugural George Best Golf Invitational this summer.

Jennings recently donated the boots to Best’s sister, Barbara McNarry, after rediscovering them.

Meanwhile the golf tournament which takes place in early July will raise money for the George Best Foundation.

A number of sporting celebrities including Jennings and Rugby World Cup winner Matt Dawson have confirmed they will be attending the Ballymena event which will also be open to the public.

As well as the golf, there will also be the first exhibition of Best’s personal possessions, including his 1968 European Cup winners’ medal, his 1968 British Player of the Year trophy and his cherished Mini Cooper ‘S’.
