Fulham took Atletico Madrid to extra time in the Europa League final in Hamburg, but a second goal from Diego Forlan in the 116th minute was too much for the Cottagers.
Diego Forlan slots the ball past Mark Schwarzer.
Atletico Madrid came out winners in Hamburg, beating Fulham 2-1 after extra time, but once again Fulham demonstrated why they deserved their place in the final with another spirited display.
Former Manchester United misfit Diego Forlan scored both goals for Atletico. The Uruguayan scored the opener half an hour in before Simon Davies equalised with a volley minutes later. But, Forlan scored his second with just five minutes left to play which brought the Fulham faithful to their knees.
Fulham left flat out after Forlan’s winner.
Roy Hodgson who managed the club on this incredible journey was awarded the LMA manager of the year prize earlier in the week, he said:
The Premier League, like Serie A, like the Spanish Primera Liga, the Bundesliga, you’re talking about the very, very top leagues in Europe and just being a part of it in itself is something very important.
adidas will be pleased with the outcome of the match too. Despite both teams wearing Nike football kits, Diego Forlan, the scorer of both of Atletico Madrid’s goals was giving the new adidas f50 adiZero their competitive debut.
The Uruguayan hit-man – wearing the World Cup Black/Sun Yellow adiZero - was on unstoppable form in the final, and his tireless work that say him score the winner after 115 minutes was the perfect advert for the light weight of the adiZero being a key factor when it comes to tired legs in the dieing minutes of a game.
