The Champions League this year has seen a spoil of classic matches over it’s course; with Barcelona’s continued dominance, Tottenham’s memorable first season and the dark horse of Schalke 04, there’s been plenty to entertain the neutrals.

But if we could take the best elements of every team that participated this year – the best players – who would make the cut in an ultimate team?

Well, we’re here to tell you who we think would make the cut in a Footy-Boots.com Fantasy XI…

Goalkeeper:

Edwin van Der Sar – Manchester United- adidas adiPower Predator football boots

A close call between the experienced stopper and plucky youngster Manuel Neuer, Gabriel on the Footy-Boots.com Facebook page pointed out that VDS’s consistency has been second to none in the Champions League this season.

Conceding only 3 goals up until the final and making a total of 34 saves puts the now-retired Dutchman our first choice between the sticks

Defenders:

RB: Dani Alves – Barcelona – adidas F50 adiZero Prime football boots

Alves has made the headlines on the back pages for a few senseless displays of play acting, but had the Brazilian stayed on his feet, his record in the top club competition in the world would speak for itself.

Playing a full 90 minutes in all bar one of Barcelona’s games in the campaign, Alves’ tireless workrate has seen him bag two goals and two assists to add to his collection of 5 clean sheets across the competition.

CB:Branislav Ivanovic – Chelsea – Nike T90 Laser III football boots

The Versatile Serbian has been invaluable for Chelsea this term, deputising when the rest of the back line suffered injuries and clocking up a full 90 minutes in all 10 of Chelsea’s Champions League matches.

Ivanovic’s happy knack of grabbing goals has proved invaluable too, helping himself to a brace against Spartak Moscow.

CB: Gerard Pique – Barcelona – Nike Tiempo Legend III football boots

Whilst many may have plumped for his partner-in-crime Carlos Puyol at the back, the curly-haired one’s auspicious 5 game absence gave Pique chance to show why he plays week-in, week-out at the Camp Nou and why he was ahead of Puyol in the team for the final.

Playing in all bar one of the blaugrana’s run to the trophy, there can be little doubt that the former Manchester United man is one of the most valuable cogs in the Barca machine.

LB: Marcelo – Real Madrid – Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly III football boots

Plucky full-back Marcelo has shone in all competitions as one of the most versatile players in Mourinho’s squad.

Like Dani Alves, Marcelo’s attacking prowess is matched only by his solidarity in defence; a record in this campaign of two goals, two assists and eight clean sheets – not to mention playing in every game – Marcelo has had a season to remember for Real.

Midfield:

Mesut Ozil – Real Madrid – Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly III football boots

Not many players can claim to have the ‘breakthrough’ season that Gareth Bale did. From his precious hat-trick away against Inter Milan to his tireless workrate, Bale is one player that is capable of giving a full-back nightmares.

Whilst we won’t see Tottenham in the Champions League over the next 12 months, there’s no guarantee we might not yet see Bale again.

Forwards:

Fast, skilful and great with both feet – there have been games over the last 7 months in which Messi has been completely unplayable.

Part of being a great player is having the ability to keep your momentum going, even when the team might not be having the best of seasons. So is the story of 2010-11 for Samuel Eto’o.

Enduring managerial upheaval and dips in form from those normally most reliable (Maicon, our Facebook fans would like a word with you!) the Cameroon international still racked up an impressive 8 goals and 5 assists during Inter’s 10-game term

Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid – Nike CR Safari Mercurial football boots

It would be hard not to include Ronaldo after the record-breaking season he has had under countryman Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

Despite his set-pieces still providing a constant source of disappointment for the Bernabeau faithful, the powerful Portuguese netted 6 goals and created 2 more for his team mates.

GK: Almunia (valdes untested, vds had a great defense in front of him)
RB: Alves (maybe o shea bc he got the only goal)
CB: Terry (barca didn’t have much to do with possession)
CB: Ferdinand (great job silencing adebayor, cant give defensive place to arsenal being the only defense to concede a goal)
LB: Bosingwa (to keep Messi quiet is something most defenders have to fantasize about, Evra dealt with Walcott but Walcott is no Messi, Abidal was attacking more than defending)
CM: Carrick (did a great job disrupting the midfield, Fabregas was virtually not there, Mikel would be runner up having kept Barcas midfield to minimal damage)
RCM: Iniesta (possibly the best player of both games, great skill hardworker, only problem with him is hes inconsistent, but this week he was on, well done, chelseas midfield was there for tackling, not very impressed with that, but they did do a great job)
LCM: Anderson (showed that he should be in the starting XI a little more often, tons of creativity, really like it, arsenals mids were held to nothing)
RW: Ronaldo (really opens the game up for man u, scary for defenses, Messi wasn’t fully there, when you’re incredible every other game of the year and you come into this and you are only amazing its sad that you find people like me who are disappointed at it, he had his chance against bosingwa now hes gotta deal with cole, one of the best LBs in the world)
LW: Malouda (did a great job of making sure Alves and Messi were being pressured at all times, Walcott and Henry were defended pretty tightly)
ST: Rooney (None of the strikers impressed me, none of them had more than 2 shots, Drogba touched the ball maybe twice, etoo was quiet, rooney and tevez both had the space and should have attacked it a lot harder, adebayor looked like a practice ground training dummy, i thought about putting ronaldo to here and slotting messi to the right but i think rooney did the best, even though he was playing more of a left wing kind of position)

I think vidic instead of pique, vidic was probably our best player all season, on top of that he is a great captain, vidic and ivanovic in defense would make this team become incredibly sturdy at the back.
I also wouldnt pick bale, he isnt a consistent player, Im thinking J.S.Park since he has been working like a little trojan throughout his time back at the CL and has been a vital part to man uniteds system.
I think rooney should come into the system somewhere because he has been very impressive since he went back on form.
