New Football Boots

NIKE TIEMPO AIR LEGEND II

Nike Tiempo Air Legend II - The football boot of choice for Joe Cole, Cesc Fabregas, and Carlos Tevez.

Background

In 1971, Nike created its first football boot prototype. However it was not until 1994 that the football boot brand made its first move into the world’s most popular sport.

The final of the 1994 World Cup, held in the USA, saw 10 of the players on the pitch, including Brazil’s Romario and Italy’s Paolo Maldini, wear the Nike Tiempo.

Air Legends II white anthraciteThe Nike Tiempo II is the updated version of the Nike Air Legend football boot and will be worn by the likes of Joe Cole, Cesc Fabregas, Andrea Pirlo, and Carlos Tevez.

15 grams lighter than the Nike Air Legend, the Nike Tiempo II weighs in at 315 grams. The design aims for the new Nike Tiempo II were to re-engineer the upper and heel counter, decreasing the tongue size, to reduce the overall weight of the football boot, whilst ensuring a comfortable fit and improved performance.

The new Tiempo Air Legend II has an all over soft kangaroo leather upper for superior comfort and ball feel with the updated pattern design from the previous model giving a pro fit. The fold over tongue is designed to give a smoother ball-striking surface.

The high performance midsole features a moulded sockliner with a re-engineered Zoom Air heel unit providing responsive cushioning and reinforced protection in the tackle.

The lightweight TPU outsole has a glass fibre shank and toe for lightweight support and stability, with forefoot flex grooves providing added flexibility.

A combination of traditional conical and bladed studs allow the player to benefit from a 360 degree grip for optimal traction and pressure dispersion.

The lightweight Nike Tiempo II is available in a soft and firm ground option and retails at a price of £84.99.

NIKE MERCURIAL VAPOR 4

Nike-Vapor-5Nike Mercurial Vapor IV

In February 2008, Nike celebrated 10 years of its Mercurial football line with the release of its most innovative football boot to date: The Mercurial Vapor IV.

Kitbag

First designed specifically for Brazilian striker Ronaldo in 1998, the Mercurial was produced to meet the needs of the world’s fastest footballers and has been making an impact ever since. In the last six seasons, the top scorer in the English Premier League has worn Mercurial Vapor boots.

Mercurial Vapor 4

For the Mercurial Vapor IV, Nike called on Premier League forwards such as Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo and Theo Walcott for direct input into the design process. As a result, Nike has developed a series of technological innovations that maximize speed with and without the ball .

Speed Plate
The Mercurial Vapor IV features Nike’s innovative Speed Plate technology designed to give players instant acceleration and make them fastest to the ball. Additionally, a re-engineered upper has been crafted not just to make players faster, but faster while dribbling and shooting.

Tactile Coating

In order to aid dribbling with the ball at speed, just one seam exists in the shoe’s upper material, while a new stitched stretch lace cover creates a cleaner ball contact area. The football boot is also wrapped in a clear tactile coating that creates a gripped surface for all playing conditions.

Vapor Traction System

The Mercurial Vapor IV’s Vapor Traction System broadens the scope of player fit; heel pods have been expanded laterally for more cushioning and extra protection. Stabilizing the foot, a form-fitting insert cradles the heel, while a Glass Fiber heel wrap provides lightweight stability with minimal slippage. All told, the comfortable ride of the Mercurial Vapor allows for sustained play at speed, keeping the ball where it should be: on your feet or in the net.

NIKE MERCURIAL VAPOR IV BERRY

So here it is. The 8th version of the Nike Mercurial Vapour IV – the Berry. And in shocking pink.

This limited edition football boot will be available from 24th November, retailing at £119.99. However, being a limited edition model you may want to pre-order the boot to avoid disappointment.

Kitbag

It’s certainly different but the usual Nike traits and technology are all there.

First off, the vibrant pink colour is coupled with cutting-edge aesthetics which portray speed and create a supersonic look.

Nike Mercurial Vapor IV Berry

Designed for quickness of foot and to help players be fastest to the ball, the Mercurial Vapor incorporates the patented Vapor Traction System which provides low-profile acceleration and multi-directional grip.

Stablising the foot, a form-fitting EVA insert cradles the heel, whilst a clear TPU/Glass Fiber heel wrap – visible from the outside – provides lightweight stability with minimal slippage. All together, the comfortable ride of this boot allows for sustained play at speed.

The football boot, which was made in Italy, should certainly stand out on the pitch, providing that is, some or any of Nike’s players will be brave enough to embrace it’s bold colour scheme not to mention the dressing room banter.

We are told that the likes of Andrei Arshavin, Marco Materazzi and Milan Baros, will debut the football boots in their respective league games next weekend.

There’s no doubt that the Mercurial Vapor has become one of the game’s most successful football boots since it was first launched 10 years ago, having originally been designed for Brazilian super star Ronaldo.

Nike-Vapor-5In the Premier League they have been worn to great effect by Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba of Chelsea and Manchester City’s Robinho.

Indeed, for the past seven years, the leading scorer in the Premier League has won the Mercurial Vapor.

Whether they’ll go for the Berry remains to be seen but you certainly won’t be able to miss them if they do.

NIKE TIEMPO SUPER LIGERA

Nike Tiempo Super Ligera Football Boots

order ligera nowJust how did the Nike Tiempo Super Ligera come about and, some might say, why did it come about?

As it happens, the football boot isn’t aimed at the European player, nor the American market. Instead, it’s been produced for the Asian market and in particular, the Japanese Bukatsu player.

Nike Tiempo Super Ligera 1

Designed by Doug Wilken, the Tiempo Super Ligera brings two worlds of performance together in a lightweight yet durable football boot.

When it came to the design of the Tiempo Super Ligera, Wilken was keen to find out first hand about the needs of the player. So, through focus meetings conducted with Japanese Bukatsu groups, he learned that these players needed — and wanted — a boot that was lightweight and soft. However, by studying wear tests Wilken was able to assess something else that they needed — durability.

For the Japanese bukatsu player who plays from dawn to dusk, football is everything. And they play primarily on hard fields made of coarse, packed dirt, which is especially tough on their football boots.

Designed on a new, Asian-specific footwear last, the Tiempo Super Ligera is wider than the typical football boot, with an extended throat to give the boot more versatility and variation. By identifying high-wear areas on the football boots that the players used, Wilken targeted these areas and screen-printed a layer of Nike Grind on those spots in order to protect the foot and strengthen the boot without adding weight. A gusseted tongue helps prevent irritation by preventing dust and sand from getting into the boot during play. Reflective elements were added in the upper for those games that take place at dusk.

Nike Tiempo Super Ligera 2

Translucent studs reveal an inner plate injected with a TPU that provides both strength and structure while imbuing the shoe with a lightweight aesthetic. Working with the Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL), Wilken examined the motion of the players’ feet and incorporated a longitudinal flex groove. The flex groove allows the foot to flex from side to side, while isolating the fifth metatarsal head, where most of the foot’s power originates.

SPECIALI

Umbro reinvents its Speciali Football Boot for 2008/09 season, offering a new twist to a modern classic football boot.

speciali

The Speciali has developed a reputation as a classic football boot chosen by those players who favour simple elegance over modern designs. Over the years, the Speciali has been associated with many players perhaps most notably Alan Shearer who scored the majority of his 313 career goals in the Speciali.

Now, with the launch of the Speciali 2008 version another bastion of English football has chosen to wear the football boot – Michael Owen.

The original football boot was launched back in 1992 and has graced football pitches all over the world scoring some of the most famous goals ever, who can forget Roberto Carlosʼ bending free kick against France in Le Tournoi or Michael Owenʼs wonder goal in France 98? Both were scored in Speciali. Other notable past players include Rivaldo, Henrik Larrson, Steve McManaman and Mark Hughes, so these football boots have goals in them!

For 2008 Umbro have put a modern twist on the football boot through the subtle integration of state of the art technologies, while maintaining original features which have ensured the football boots position as a classic.

Technology Highlights

The Speciali utilises original wishbone technology for superb foot stability.

In addition, a new covered lacing helps to provide total ball control and unparalleled style.

Meanwhile, the original Italian K leather makes for the ultimate comfort and feel.

CONCAVE FOOTBALL BOOTS - Q&A

Due to launch in the UK in just a few days time, the new Concave football boots have been causing quite a stir. We thought we’d catch up with the guys behind the scenes and get some answers to the most asked questions we’ve seen.

It’s very unusual for a new football boot to create some much discussion before it has been released, but there is something about the Concave football boots that seems to have struck a chord with those in the know. With limited information around about the football boot in advance of the release (the Concave football boot launches on August 1), we thought we’d send our roving reporter out to visit Concave’s ‘tech department’ and see what they have to say. Armed with the most asked questions in our email and comments box, off we ran… well cantered.

concave football boots

Footy Boots - So what’s so different about these Concave boots compared to other football boots?

Concave - Concave football boots have a unique concave shaped element along the natural ridge line of the instep of the foot (where the laces normally are).  This concave shape made of a patented 3 density TPU compound (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) acts to cup the ball, providing a shaped platform which gives greater interface for kicking the ball, which leads to greater accuracy, power and control of a ball. The concave element also provides greater protection for the metatarsal bones in the foot.

Concave boots are designed to enable more accuracy, control and power on a far more consistent basis than with a regular football boot. This means better results on the pitch.

Footy Boots - Tell us more about this now ‘infamous’ Concave sweet spot?

Concave - Most mis-kicks or inaccurate kicks occur when the ball does not strike the “sweet spot” of a football boot. The “sweet spot” on a Concave boot is approximately four times larger than that on a standard football boot, which allows for a far greater chance of accuracy, power and control; and reduced chance of a mis-kick.

The concept is similar to that of tennis racquets with oversized heads which provide a greater “sweet spot” surface area for optimum contact with the ball.

Footy Boots - Has this actually been tested though?

Concave - Yes. In a series of tests, Concave football boots were found to improve accuracy by up to 40 per cent, and increase speed and power by between 10 and 15 per cent. Testing has proven that the design and material used in the football boot can significantly increase the performance of the traditional football boot in the critical areas of velocity, power and control.

Specifically, machine testing and human testing undertaken by Australia’s largest technology consulting firm, Invetech Pty Ltd. and Monash University’s Rehab-Tech Department, found that accuracy improved by up to 40 per cent, while speed and power increased by between 10 and 15 per cent due predominantly to the four times larger sweet spot.

concave football

Footy Boots - We’ve had questions about concerns with kicking with the side of the foot, what do you make of that?

Concave - Well, independent player testing demonstrated that the integration of the concave element into the boot instep allows for flexibility of kicking on and off the concave element.

Footy Boots - Well it’s good to hear that they have been tested. Back to the kicking and the Concave element as this is interesting. What if I kick a ball on a part of the football boot other than the Concave element?

Concave - If the ball strikes the sweet spot of the concave element, it will travel with greater accuracy and power by utilising the design of the football boot. However if the intention is to kick with another part of the boot the user will not notice any difference from another pair of football boots.

Footy Boots - Does the unique external design of the football boot affect the overall comfort of Concave boots?

Concave - Great care has been taken to select the finest materials for construction and adding ergonomically correct cushioning in the heel and areas of the forefoot and above the stud configurations. In addition to the revolutionary design of the top of the football boot, the outsole, the foot bed, and the sockliner have each been crafted by an industry leading football  footwear designer to work in concert with the top of the shoe to provide a complete state-of-the-art football boot which provides exceptional comfort and performance, but of course like with all new football boots, the Concave boots need to be broken in.

Footy Boots - Do you have any evidence to back Concave’s claims that their football boots can actually improve performance?

Concave - Yes.

Footy Boots - And finally, a national crisis happens every time England prepare for a major tournament, its know as ‘the metatarsal injury’ does the Concave football boot offer the same foot protection as other leading brands?

Concave - For sure. Concave’s upper design, specifically the concave element, offers increased protection against the occurrence of metatarsal impact injuries, as the concave element provides an additional layer, a patented 3 density TPU compound, (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) with lightweight foam which covers the entire metatarsal area and better absorbs shock from striking the ball.

BIKKEMBERGS TIROSEGNO

Introducing Dirk Bikkembergs latest football boot, the Tirosegno.

BIKKEMBERGS TIROSEGNO

We love the way Dirk Bikkembergs launches his football boots. Conformists suggest that you should get a handful of famous footballers together doing a few keep uppy’s, perhaps even talk about the football boots in a press conference when you launch a football boot. Not Dirk.

The new football boot was launched at the Stazione Leopolda, Florence. In true Bikkembergs tradition, the Tirosegno was displayed sixtyfold on top of black lacquered columns and overlooked by 10 gigantic pictures. These pictures were at first hidden by black curtains in an even darker room. The guests received a torchlight and discovered the reflective qualities of the Tirosegno while walking amidst the columns. One by one, the pictures were uncovered during a countdown, at the end of which the room was totally lit up by a set of dazzling stadium lights coming from behind a stage packed with football players wearing the football boot, 100 in total! Now that’s a launch!

Tirosegno

BIKKEMBERGS TIROSEGNO

Dirk Bikkembergs has launched his second generation football boot, the Tirosegno (the last football boot was called Bix). The name Tirosegno, was named to reflect the significance of the radiating circles found on the football boots, and should be read as a combination of the words ‘tiro a segno’. This means ‘target practice’ or more symbolically ‘launch’, ‘kick’, ‘to score’ or ‘signal’. We’re not sure what relevance ‘signal’ is, but the others are pretty apt.

The new football boot aims to be the number one designer football boot with top performance qualities and fashion upbringing. Four versions of the Tirosegno are available, soft ground, firm ground, astro turf and indoor.

Testing was done by Dirk Bikkembergs’ own football team (how cool is that?), F.C. Bikkembergs Fossombrone and more conventionally by Italy and Juventus stopper, Giorgio Chiellini.

tirosegna football boots

The upper is a one piece micro fibre, blended with a reflective 3M material. The result being an alternating reflective and non reflective array of circles on the football boot. The 3M material makes the football boots very visible with even a low amount of light hitting the Tirosegno football boot.

Dirk Bikkembergs said of the boots:

Tirosegno “The Tirosegno reflects the essence of the two worlds I stand for. It is the result of a unique project in which I confronted the exclusivity of fashion and the universe of football in the right proportion. What you will see is a fashion jewel with top performance qualities. What does a player want more?”

RONALDINHO DOIS 10R

We introduced the Ronaldinho DOIS football boot last week, which got a mixed review. Here are some new images, including an out of shape Ronaldinho.

RONALDINHO DOIS

Ronaldinho looks to be at a crossroads in his career. It would seem that Barcelona are looking to cash in on him, with AC Milan and Manchester City, both UEFA Cup competitors, chasing his signature.

His form has been poor and rumours of living a lifestyle inappropriate for the former World Player of the Year, look to be true based on his physique.

Despite all that, Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, as his mother named him, has launched his new football boot, as we reported last week, in the article RONALDINHO DOIS.

The Ronaldinho DOIS has had mixed reviews from the Footy Boots community. Emails and comments have been both praising and slating this new football boot. Take a look at these new images and make up your own minds.

CONCAVE FOOTBALL BOOTS - THE LOWDOWN

Last week, we ran a story about the soon to be launched Concave football boot. Boy, did it cause a storm. We had comments coming out of our ears while industry message boards were full of little else in the days after we posted the story.

CONCAVE FOOTBALL BOOT

At the time, a lot of what was written was speculation and conjecture, based on just a couple of images that had found their way on to the Web.

But now, Concave has gone public and, as the saying goes, they are putting their money (and it looks like they’ve spent big on this) where their mouth is.

Looking at the blurb, it’s clear that Concave has concentrated on 3 particular aspects – power, accuracy and protection, three aspects which are pretty important to footballers.

Concave Football Boots

Upper

Having been furnished with a pair of the Concave football boots at Footy Boots HQ, we were keen to take a first hand look at the technology advances that Concave boasts.

The Concave football boot’s most revolutionary feature is the convex shape of the upper, which of course matches that of a football and has been developed to ‘cup’ the ball on contact.

CONCAVE kick

This component on the upper also increases the surface area of the sweet spot, which Concave state is up to four times bigger than usual.

The football boot upper, part leather, part synthetic, has an interesting lace system too. The laces are covered by the Concave component, but they only use two eyes. When we tried the football boots we were pleased to find that this construction was most effective and the football boot felt snug and secure on the foot.

Something we regularly comment on at Footy Boots is the football boot protection, or lack of it, to the metatarsal. Concave have considered this infamous injury in their design and the upper contains an aptly named ‘MetaGuard’. The ‘MetaGuard’ is a flexible layer of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and reinforced cushioning foam composite. We couldn’t feel the ‘MetaGuard’ when the football boot was on, but its good to know its there.

Soft Ground Soleplate

7 screw in studs, with a configuration to even pressure across the sole and a single blade in the forefoot mid section.

CONCAVE soleplate

On the sole, the boot is equipped with a balance stabiliser. In the middle of the sole, this stabiliser helps balance the front and rear of the foot, an area that again can cause metatarsal injury, the stabiliser prevents too much flexibility here.

Summary

We’ll be trying the Concave football boots out in match and training situations, but we did give the football boots a quick run out. In the brief knock up we were impressed by the football boot comfort and support. However, what stood out is that we felt like we’d been on mild steroids when kicking in power situations. More on that when we fully test the Concave football boots.

We liked the look of the football boots, a stylish colourway, and we were very impressed with how the football boot looks to be made. As always we pulled and squeezed and bent the boot and there was no signs of weakness - again we’ll find out more on the quality when we test them with more exertion.

Concave are looking for ambassadors, presumably in the Premier League (and no, the Carlton Cole football boots you may have seen were just a mock up – he hasn’t signed with them to our knowledge), but to add some credibility to the project, they have contracted the former Scotland and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.

We’ve lined up a Q&A with the Concave ‘techies’ and hope to tie up with Kenny Dalglish shortly to get a legend’s take on the football boots.

RONALDO EURO 2008 FOOTBALL BOOTS

Cristiano Ronaldo likes to be different, so when most of the Nike endorsed players are brandishing a retro coloured football boot, Ronaldo goes…… green!

Kitbag

Avid football boot fans will have seen Cristiano Ronaldo’s football boots in Portugal’s opener against Turkey and against the Czech’s. Ronaldo is wearing the Mercurial Vapor IV football boots in Euro 2008. Unlike most of the Nike endorsed players, who are wearing the Euro 2008 retro brown collection, Ronaldo is wearing a unique green pair, which, like any good woman will tell you, matches perfectly with the trim on his Portugal shirt.

Wonderful, Wizard, Winger, Winker or as Man Utd fans may feel right now Wan… ahem… Whatever you call him he’s the best player in the world and here are his football boots.
