Matt Taylor was sent off for Birmingham after just 2 minutes, for a dreadful foul on Eduardo of Arsenal. But 10 men Birmingham battle on and gain a point in the last minute of extra time.
Eduardo broke a his leg in a challenge from Martin Taylor in the second minute of this game. The horrific injury left the Arsenal team subdued for the first half, which saw 10 man Birmingham take the lead.
James McFadden from a free kick, shot over the wall and beat Almunia, putting the ball in the top right hand corner of the goal.
Arsenal looked as if they put the injury to Eduardo behind them in the second half and came out all guns blazing.
Just four minutes into the second half and Arsenal were level. From a corner Adebayor looked to have fouled the Birmingham keeper when the ball fell to Theo Walcott, who poked the ball home from close range. Walcott’s first Premier League goal.
Ten minutes later and Arsenal were ahead. Walcott cut in quickly from the right hand side and hit an early left footed shot to the right hand corner, which left Maik Taylor with no chance.
Walcott really seemed in the mood with confidence sky high, and just before the hour mark, he could have had his hat trick. Adebayor laid the ball off just outside the box, Walcott, unchallenged, struck but saw the ball slice to the right of the goal.
Although Birmingham tried to dig in, Arsenal continued to create the better chances. Adebayor and Bendtner with the best of them.
Ultimately Arsenal looked too strong for 10 man Birmingham and were ready to travel south to London with an 8 point lead on Manchester United, but in the 92nd minute, Clichy fouled Parnaby in the box and the referee rightly pointed to the spot. McFadden stepped up for the spot kick and scored his second blasting past Almunia, again in the top right hand corner of the net.
