David Beckham and LA Galaxy claim Beckham’s transfer is for football reasons. Pull the other one!

David Beckham Football Boots

Let’s get one thing straight, David Beckham has not been bought by LA Galaxy for his football ability. LA Galaxy have signed David Beckham to make money.

At LA Galaxy, Beckham will earn;

£128 million over 5 years

£25.6 million a year

£2.1 million a month

£70 thousand a day

It’s almost four times Andriy Shevchenko’s £130,000 and Thierry Henry’s £120,000 weekly salary and five times Steven Gerrards’s £100,000 per week deal.

For LA Galaxy to afford these payments, they must be getting something in return and it is not value for money from his football skill.

If LA Galaxy wanted to improve as a football team, would they shell out this sum on a 31 year old? Of course not, they would spend on Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry, John Terry or Christiano Ronaldo if they wanted to improve on the field.

David Beckham has been cast aside by his national team and has not been playing in a Real Madrid side that, since Beckham’s arrival, have not won any major honours.

LA Galaxy have seen the potential of Beckham’s marketing muscle. When David Beckham signed for Real Madrid he had a medical. That medical was televised live by 39 TV networks worldwide and Spanish insurance group Grupo Sanitas, reportedly paid more than $400,000 to sponsor the broadcast.

Real Madrid recouped his £20m transfer fee through shirt sales in his first year at the club. The club shop sold 8,000 replica shirts bearing his name on the day he signed in 2003.

LA Galaxy knows they can tap into the Beckham icon and earn from him. Beckham knows his football ability is not what it was, so it makes sense that both parties take advantage of the situation.

I have no issues over LA Galaxy or David Beckham making the most from this deal. What I do have an issue with, is the way they both Galaxy and Beckham, claim the move is for football reasons.

Do they really think we are as dumb as, err, err, David Beckham?

i dont know if this subjective amatuer peice of writing was wrote for a response or not, but the fact of the matter is that beckham is still a top player. yes madrid may have won nothing since he has been there but i think not only is it naive to link beckhams arrival to this but also ignorant. manchester utd bought wayne rooney and since he has been at the club we have only won an FA cup which by our standards is poor. has wayne rooney weakened the side, dont be silly i say success is attributed to the club as a whole not one individual. look at madrids structure, they had 4 managers in the time becks was there, hold on maybe 5, presidential elections were publicised more than their fall from grace aswell as training ground bust ups (gravesen) so no wonder with instability like that they won nothing. Yes LA galaxy must have one eye on his marketing side, there is no way that there is enough money in the american game to finance his wages on success alone, but to suggest that they have bought him purely for financial reasons is ridiculous, in that case they may aswell bring maradona out of retirement if the idea is just to land a big name. and talking about maradona, theres another guy who televised a medical when he signed for napoli, so does that make him a sell out too. beckham has too many critics for doing what he does best and that is play football, he is technically brilliant and a sound athlete. yes he was dropped by capello an the national side, and yes van nistlerooy was dropped by sir alex and fell out of the national side, so is he rubbish too? i think not his goalscoring record speaks for itself. becks opta stats are still intimidating in terms of successful pass completion, its just that because these stat arent as widely available as goals scored they get looked over. get a grip and take another look at an english legend

It is quite obvious buying Beckham is a marketing scheme, but I do still think he is a quality player and, even at 31, a couple classes above most MLS players. 70 thousand a month quality? Obviously not–hell, they might have been able to pry Ronaldinho for that much …(erm.. maybe not..probably a lot more with the transfer fee, but nevermind).

Beckham might be telling the truth when saying he ‘wants to make history’ or whatever in America, but given the fact that multiple high profile teams such as Milan have approached him, I’m sure money has a lot to do with it. That and probably his wife.
The Galaxy, I feel, is not admitting that Becks is being bought for marketing reasons because the general football ignorance in America. I live in America and while the World Cup helped shed light on the footballing world, many still believe Beckham is a top player with the likes of Ronaldinho and Henry. If people believe he is one of the world’ s best players, then they won’t believe the Galaxy are just buying him as some advertising gimmick.

The media though fails to mention that the entire 128m quid deal includes various endorsements, and his actual salary from the club is around 4-5mil per year.
All that said, I have my doubts about how much success signing Beckham will bring. People just won’t be interested enough in my opinion (I know I won’t buy a Galaxy shirt because it has ‘Beckham’ on the back). Maybe his signing encourage other players to come.

Mate, you couldn’t of said it any better! You took the words from me mouth mate! Beckham is a sideliner and is pretty much finished in European Football… can u imagine what the other footballers are finking of? He’s the laughing stock forget the money he is receiving from LA Galaxy…

Ohh and I live in N. America, football will NEVER be a popular sport here and Beckham is not able to change that even if he was paid 1 billions $$$ when you cross the Atlantic you are surrounded by POP culture that means, American Football, Baseball, Basketball and than Hockey, football is not even in there!

Well said mate!
my best,
-Joey

Jay C, you make some interesting points and some poor ones, but none change my opinion that Beckham and LA Galaxy are in this for the money…

Don’t misunderstand me, I think Beckham has been a good English footballer, but it’s his image that has been bought and sold here, not his ability.

i am an avid david beckham fan as you can probably tell and its easy to see that in LA it will be great for him in terms of family life due to america’s western culture. No doubt his marketing potential is an asset to the deal but its wrong to assume that they have signed him on this alone. I work as a football coach for a premier league club and i know alot of people who know david beckham very well. My point is that when a coach wants a player, he doesnt consult the board about his marketing ability and frank yallop will certainley be buying becks on his playmaking abilities. Imagine a team like newcastle going all out for a big name like becks, as if shepherd would put it to roeder first. thats not the way it is done. The coach buys the player, not the board. i liked this site when it was a tribute to football boots not to slating a media dartboard like becks.

“The coach buys the player, not the board” Ask Mourinho that one and see if he wanted to buy Sheva. Beckham is a money making machine - period dude!

OK you’s all think it bad, but I bet you would love to be earning 128 million over 5 years, who wouldn’t? I know I would love it and I think it would be right for him and his family. Not many soccer fans in America would know him and he hardly even started in Real Madrid.Last year was not one of the best years at all.? I think it was great that he signed for the LA Galaxy team I hope the best for him.

The MLS is starting to become a place for footballers who are past their prime. First it’s Beckham, then Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, and Ronaldo of AC Milan keep getting offers. It’s just a matter of time before Ronaldinho turns 35 and moves to the U.S.
