Gareth Barry scored twice for the home side as Aston Villa registered their first win in six games and increased Bolton’s relegation fears.
To open proceedings, Barry headed in powerfully from six yards out after an excellent run and cross from Ashley Young.
Gabriel Agbonlahor added a second from close range after a swift passing move and Villa got a third when Barry’s strike was deflected in by Joey O’Brien.
Marlon Harewood headed in a fourth as Bolton rued earlier missed chances by Heidar Helguson and Danny Guthrie.
