Aston Villa 0-2 Wigan Athletic
Wigan shock Villa to ensure Premier League status, with two second half goals.
Aston Villa were looking to move ahead of Everton and hold the Uefa Cup position, but instead Wigan secured their Premier League status in a game Steve Bruce suggested ‘was their best performance of the season’.
The first half was a dull affair, but Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia broke the deadlock on 52 minutes when his shot deflected off Wilfred Bouma and went over the head of Scott Carson.
Valencia also got the second goal on 63 minutes when he got on the end of Emile Heskey’s flick, his shot with the outside of his football boot fired past Carson at his near post and wrapped up the points for Wigan.
