Real Madrid have flexed their financial muscles yet again and are close to signing Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.

SOCCER: JUN 17 Confederation Cup - Iraq v Spain

The Merseyside club accepted a bid of around £30 million for the player who will soon undergo a medical at the Bernabeu. Should that go well, Alonso will become the second Liverpool player to join the Spanish giants following defender Alvaro Arbeloa’s move last week.

A statement on the Real Madrid web site said that the 27 year old player, who joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad in 2004, will undergo his medical later today.

Alonso’s deal will push Madrid’s spending under returning president Florentino Perez above the £200 million mark following major money purchases of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

The spending spree follow rivals Barcelona unique triple success both in Spain and Europe last season.

Real meanwhile, have failed to progress beyond the last 16 of the Champions League for the past five seasons.

It’s not funny anymore when one team buys most of the good players out there. Hope they fail and learns a lesson -.-

Real seem to think they can practically buy the CL trophy; the club’s problem will be getting the superstars to gel and work as a unit. There could be ego issues with having another Galacticos . . .

Agreed. I would love to see this collapse. I love Alonso and Kaka, but this is getting disgusting
