Arsenal arrived at the San Siro in Italy, in the knowledge that the Italians had never lost to an English side at home. But, with the tie all square at 0-0, AC Milan new they had to be careful of an Arsenal away goal.

Milan started the game looking confident and aggressive, Arsenal did concede a couple of corners but Milan were unable to capitalise.

The first opportunity fell to the gunners, Adebayor played the ball off to Diaby, but his shot was high of the goal. AC Milan responded immediately when Inzaghi made Almunia save with a scuffed effort.

Midway through the second half and Arsenal started to dominate the game. Adebayor had a shot on goal that went close and Fabregas shortly after had a shot blocked. Arsenal were in their rhythm and had Milan pegged in their own half, with Fabregas controlling much of Arsenal’s play. Hleb had a valid penalty claim just after half hour, but instead of receiving the spot kick, he received a yellow card for his efforts.

Arsenal were still creating opportunities and could have been ahead with a Fabregas shot from just outside the box which thundered against the crossbar. Flamini meanwhile for Arsenal, was mindful of the Kaka threat and limited his creativity.

Half time and Arsenal were disappointed to have still not registered a goal against Milan.

Within minutes of the second period, Senderos should have done better when a corner landed at his feet, only to see him strike towards the keeper. Then Eboue moments later snatched at a shot that should, at the least, worked the goalkeeper.

Arsenal were still without a goal, when with 15 to go, Hleb played a terrific chip into the path of substitute Walcott in the area, but his cross could not be collected by Adebayor, another opportunity went begging.

With 6 minutes remaining, Fabregas shot with a speculative shot that found the left hand corner of the goal. Milan needed two!

Then in injury time, Walcott broke down the right and slid the ball across the box for Adebayor to slot home and secure Arsenal’s progression into the next round.

A well deserved win for Arsenal in what has proved to be a fortress in the Champions League.
