Fans at Sunday’s Carling Cup Final will be able to monitor their own progress as well as their team’s thanks to digital technology inside the stadium.

In a world first, Carling has teamed up with Sky Sports to track the highs and lows from the stands as well as the pitch via live sound level readings from both ends of Wembley.

Supporters inside the stadium will be updated four times during each half via digital advertising boards around the ground and a specially installed giant LED screen in front of the Royal Box.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports viewers will be able to see “Fan-o-Meter” readings during their coverage of the first domestic final of the season.

The readings will be based on a percentage share of the volume based on maximum decibel levels recorded over ten minute periods.*

As an extra spin-off, the noise generated will raise valuable funds for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK with the donation rising in line with the volume level. Carling has pledged a sum of £10,000 but the figure will increase to £15,000 if the decibel level hits 100 dB and £20,000 if it exceeds 110 dB.

The idea has been backed by leading figures at both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bolton boss Gary Megson has insisted that he isn’t concerned by the negative reaction he receives from the club’s fans. This is despite being criticised at the majority of home games since he joined the club.

Most fans point to the style of play that Megson’s team adopt in the Premier League and this, combined with some indifferent results, has led to speculation about his future at the club.

However, Megson himself is a determined individual and he has said that he ‘couldn’t care less’ about what some of the Bolton fans think. It appears that the only thing he is focused on is ensuring survival for his team this season.

The former West Brom manager says that he puts all his effort into ‘getting results’ each week and that there is nothing he can do to prevent the negative reaction from sections of the crowd. Megson then went on to insist he will ‘just keep ploughing on’.

Considering the way the fans have reacted to him recently, there has inevitably been speculation about who the club may want to replace Megson should he be shown the door.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle has been suggested by some football betting websites to be Megson’s successor at the Reebok Stadium. However, such rumours are neither here nor there to the Bolton boss.

The Trotters chief says that he ‘doesn’t read newspapers’ and that such speculation is just part of what being a Premier League manager is all about. Overall, it seems that Megson is dealing with the situation very well.

As for his team, well they sit in 12th position right now and considering they are seven points clear of the relegation zone, the football odds expect them to avoid the drop this year.

In fact, a win against Newcastle this weekend could virtually confirm their place in the Premier League for next season. However, this obviously isn’t good enough for some Bolton fans who expect more from their players and their manager.

I give feedback about what I like best, what makes me feel good and things I’m accustomed to. Nike listens to my feedback and they improve the boots each time. This boot is very different to the one I’m using and I prefer these to my old boots. The Mercurial Vapor Superfly is much lighter and helps me attack faster.

And of all the boots out there, why is the Mercurial so special?

Since I was 16 or 17, I’ve always played with the Mercurial. These boots are very different to others – they’re much lighter, but I think the boots are perfect to play in. It is something very special to play with these boots because they are known for being fast. For people to associate speed with my style of play is flattering.

Mercurial Vapor Superfly Debut

Although the Mercurial Vapor Superfly, blacked out, was used by Didier Drogba recently (Superfly Spotting) playing for the Ivory Coast, Cristiano Ronaldo will officially wear the football boot for the first time against Inter Milan on the 11th March. He will be up against Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will also be in the new Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly.

The chairman of Newcastle United has admitted publicly that the club had been naïve over the departure of former manager Kevin Keegan.

Supporters staged a number of protests against owner Mike Ashley after Keegan left the club, the most recent in Newcastle City centre last weekend before the Magpies home game with Everton. The subsequent 0 – 0 draw left the North East side just 5 points clear of the relegation zone.

Ashley responded initially by putting the club up for sale but has now taken it off the market.

Speaking to the BBC, United chairman Derek Llambias said:

The reaction was so big it was naïve on our part - we didn’t realise how big it would be.

Kevin is the messiah. He is a great guy, I promise you, Kevin was where we wanted to go.

Mike Ashley is back on board, it’s gone, we are not for sale.

The supporters have been very patient with us, please carry on being patient with us.

We have got a great squad, I mean when you look at the squad if they are all fit and up to it we are right up there.

There is a perception that top flight footballers always play in the very latest boots. By and large it’s true, but as last night showed, not always.

Liverpool’s match winner in their Champions League tie with Real Madrid was Yossi Benayoun who seems happy to stick with a pair of football boots that first came out in back in 2006.

In Madrid, Benayoun, as is the norm, sported a pair of Nike Mercurial Vapor III’s in a silver, black and red colourway.

Benayoun won the game with an 82nd minute header, but he could have grabbed the glory even earlier if the Madrid keeper, Iker Casillas, hadn’t blocked an attempted chip during the first half.

Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez says his future at Anfield could be resolved soon.

The Spaniard and his legal team have been negotiating a new contract for several weeks and rumours have persisted that he could leave the club. It’s understood that he wants a 4 year deal but that the club’s American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are unhappy at some of his demands.

However, following Liverpool’s 1 – 0 win away to Real Madrid on Wednesday in the Champions League, Benitez insisted that any stumbling blocks could be overcome and that speculation surrounding his exit was wide of the mark saying:

It needs to be clear that I was not thinking of resigning. My aim is to keep working and winning and to tell the owners that on the pitch.

I expect talks to continue between my lawyers, my advisors, myself and the owners.

I am really pleased with my position at the club, I have not been thinking about resigning.

My aim is to win every game that is possible for this club, and my advisors will continue to talk. We will see what happens then.

The club has made it clear this rumour was not true. That is important for everyone. Stability is the key if you want to be successful.

Kolo Toure’s superstition could lead to the Ivorian missing out on a Champions League quarter final game, should Arsenal qualify against Roma.

Arsenal’s stand in skipper Kolo Toure was involved in a bizarre incident at the start of the second half in Arsenal’s first leg Champions League tie with Roma, which Arsenal won by a goal to nil.

The second half of the game kicked off with Arsenal fielding just nine players, missing were Kolo Toure and William Gallas.

Just moments after the whistle, Toure and Gallas  made their way out of the tunnel and Toure, with the game having already kicked off, ran straight onto the pitch. The referee, Claus Bo Larsen, punished Toure for entering the field without permission with a yellow card.

Due to a superstition, Toure has to be the last player to leave the dressing room. As William Gallas was receiving treatment, both players were late in making the second half start.

In an effort to make amends for his late arrival, Toure went straight onto the pitch which resulted in a booking. This could have serious repercussions should he recieve another caution against Roma in the second leg and if Arsenal progress, as Toure would be suspended from playing in the quarter final game.

Toure said:

I’m always the one that comes last on the pitch and so I was waiting for William. When I came on I didn’t know I couldn’t come on straight away.

But the good news is that I’ve learned another ruling, so that is great.
