Copa América - The Oldest National Teams Tournament in the World

Even though in Europe this summer no major tournament is taking place, elsewhere across the globe, international teams are set to battle it out for two major football prizes - firstly the Copa América and then the Asian Cup. Both tournaments give Footy Boots fans the chance to see players wearing older model football boots and more obscure football boot brands, as well as the lesser brands that are more than represented during the matches, especially where players are not tied to any sponsorship deals and actually choose the football boots they play in.

Footy Boots brings you the run down of both events starting today with the Copa América. This tournament promises to be a feast of football for any fans suffering hunger pangs while they wait for the new season to start and a great chance to see some new premiership signings to boot!

Copa América 2007 Venezuela

The 42nd Copa América 2007 is the main international football tournament for South American football teams, featuring 12 teams, being held for the first time in its long history in Venezuela. It is organised by CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body. Although the event is primarily for South American teams, the United States and Mexico are playing as invitees. Argentina and Uruguay, with 14 titles each, are the greatest winners of the main tournament in the Americas. The last tournament, which is held every two years, was held in Peru, with Brazil running out the winners following an epic final against Argentina, won by Brazil in a highly charged penalty shoot-out.

Location: Venezuela
Date: June 26 - July 15
Teams: Venezuela (hosts), Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil (holders), Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia, United States
Format: Teams split into 3 groups, playing each group member once. The top two from each group and the two next “best finishers” go forward to the knock-out quarter finals.
Final: July 15th
Venue: Estadio Jose Pachencho Romero Maracaibo (21:05 GMT)

Copa América 2007 Results and News

The tournament started with a shock win perennial whipping boys Peru overcoming strongly tipped Uruguay 3-0 in the opening game, with Nike Mercurial Vapor III wearing Paolo Guerrero grabbing a late goal. Even more of a surprise was Mexico’s hammering of Brazil 2-0 with goals from Ramón Morales (Adidas F50 Tunit) and Nery Castillo (Puma v-Konstrukt) although much has been made of Brazil’s missing players: Ronaldinho and Kaka are too tired whilst Lucio and Adriano are injured, and Ronaldo and Dida have not been called up to the squad. Favourites Argentina spanked the United States 4-1, fielding a strong team featuring Messi, Crespo (now wearing Umbro football boots), Tevez and Aimar and look a hot bet for the top prize. Upcoming matches looking tasty include Colombia v United States and Argentina v Paraguay.

Nike Air Legend Blue / Gold Football Boots

Nike are set to release the last of the new colourways in its hugely successful Nike Air Legend range of football boots, with the launch of the Navy Blue / Gold colourway, which is available from June 2007.

The last new colourway for the Legends will be the White / Blue / Black which will be released immediately before the new updated football boots, imaginatively titled Nike Air Legend II, come out in October 2007.

Perry Groves Swings into Action on the Arsenal Crisis
We caught up with Arsenal legend and friend of Footy Boots, Perry Groves this week to get his take on the crisis at Arsenal following the departure of Thierry Henry. What does the fans favourite think of Thierry Henry going? Perry said “Thierry Henry’s transfer was good business, if Wenger wanted to keep him, he could have made him stay, but Wenger thinks the time is right to release him. A good bit of business.”

And Wenger himself? “Arsenal should chain Wenger to the Emirates.”

All talk has been Wenger following Henry out, but Perry believes the great man is staying, for a long time. “Wenger will sign an extension to his contract by Christmas,” Perry assured us.

The only subject left for the explosive midfielder to tackle was the David Dein departure - the event that has proved to be the catalyst to the recent events. “Dein will be back at Arsenal,” said Perry. “By keeping quiet and not getting into the media circus around the Arsenal fiasco, Dein has kept his cards close to his chest. Kroenke will be taking over or more strongly involved and Dein will be at the helm,” predicted Perry. As always Perry pitches into the Arsenal debate with a straight forward insider’s view, that the fans come to expect from the outspoken firebrand.

German football boot maker, Adidas are keeping the momentum going following on from the successful launch of Chelsea’s new “vomit yellow” away kit (see more) with the release of images of the new home and away kit for Ajax for the new season.

David Beckham in new Adidas Predator Absolute DB Football Boots

Brand Beckham is set to go into overdrive this month, as Adidas have begun their massive marketing campaign based around David Beckham’s signing for LA Galaxy in the MLS. Adidas have started by bringing Beckham, wearing his new football boots, together with another football hero, Reggie Bush (no relation to George) - of NFL team New Orleans Saints.

Adidas are going for the obvious approach and tackling the American football versus football (or “soccer”) dilemma head on in an attempt to re-educate the American masses into subscribing to their brand of football. By recruiting a star of the opposite team Adidas have at least guaranteed cross-over exposure in a country where soccer is seen as a minority sport, and is overshadowed by the big three sports of baseball, American football and basketball.

Adidas are launching the “Futbol meets Football” campaign, backed by a website www.futbolmeetsfootball.com in its first round of its fight to win over the American public over to the beautiful game. In a series of videos, Beckham is seen wearing his new football boots, the Adidas Predator Absolute David Beckham for the very first time. Helpfully Becks provides Reggie with a brand new pair and in the first video even helps him tie the laces up! Beckham is of course no stranger to bush, and he is seen in subsequent videos practising free-kicks, attempting a field goal and teaching Bush how to score a penalty. It’s a brave attempt by Adidas and the videos make great viewing, but can they win the hearts and minds of the American public to turn to soccer? If they do, Adidas will have pulled off one of the greatest marketing campaigns, in rivals Nike’s own back-yard!

Henry Shows Off His New Kit and New Reebok Sprintfits

Ex-arsenal striker Thierry Henry has been unveiled this week in his new Barcelona shirt, having taken the number 14, made famous by Johann Cruyff. Thierry Henry moved to his new Spanish club in a cut price £16million deal in a move that had been speculated on all season, but once confirmed was still a shock to Arsenal fans, who face the prospect of their club going into melt-down, especially if manager Arsene Wenger joins the exodus. Henry took the opportunity to showcase his new football boots for the first time, the Reebok Sprintfits.

Footy-Boots especially enjoyed the way as Thierry Henry was making his way onto the Barcelona pitch for the first time in front of the world’s waiting media, he stopped to tie his white Reebok Sprintfits laces, giving everyone a great view of his new football boots, and probably earning himself a few extra Euros from his sponsors, Reebok, who would have loved the exposure from that simple move! Henry saluted the assembled 20,000 Barca fans, then gave a quick demonstration of a few tricks and moves, during a carefully staged exercise.

Shearer Issues Final Call For ‘Football Heroes’

Football legend Alan Shearer has teamed up with his former football boot sponsors, Umbro to promote grassroots football through the “Umbro Football Heroes” awards, that will reward the unsung volunteers who are the lifeblood of the national game.

The former pro, now a TV pundit, will run a special coaching session for the overall ‘Football Hero’ winner but not before nine regional heroes from across England are found to represent the true spirit of football in their area. All winners will also receive tickets to a top game at Wembley Stadium and delivery of a full set of UMBRO training kit and equipment for their club.

The closing date for entries is Saturday 30th June and Shearer is appealing for those involved with the game at an amateur level to put forward their local ‘football heroes’ by posting their nomination on the campaign minisite at www.umbrofootballkits.co.uk
